One of India’s most popular Hindu festivals, Diwali is just around the corner. The festival is usually spread over a period of three days and kick starting the festivities is Dhanteras which is celebrated two days before the main festival. The day is marked by a thorough cleaning of your houses, so that Goddess Laxmi can enter your home and bless you with prosperity all year round. On this day, people buy new clothes and gold jewellery and it is mandatory to buy a stainless steel utensil on this day.

The story behind this festival goes something like this --- There was once a king called Hima. It was predicted that soon after his wedding, he would die of a snake bite. However, his clever wife devised a plan to save him. On the night of the wedding, she did not let her husband sleep. Instead she took all her jewellery and made a pile of them on the entrance of the house and spent the night singing devotional songs for her husband. Soon, Lord Yama came visiting Hima to claim his life, but got blinded by the light of the jewellery and had to retract his steps. Thereby, the festival came to be celebrated as Dhanteras.
